Free home EV charger: how it works
October 8, 2026 · by Soneil Spark

Fuel suppliers in Canada must buy carbon credits, and charging an electric car creates them. That is what funds a free charger: you keep it connected so your charging can be counted, you assign the credits, and the proceeds are shared with you in cash.
What you pay
- A $299 refundable deposit, returned once you have charged 1,250 kWh.
- One-time shipping.
- No monthly fee. Installation by an electrician, if needed, is at your cost.
What you earn
6¢/kWh for the first 1,250 kWh, then 11¢/kWh. A one-time $20 bonus is paid after your charger is connected and verified, for new customers. Earnings are examples, not guarantees, and depend on how much you charge. Not income.
Why we say “free” with a deposit
Free charger always means with the refundable deposit, for new customers only. The deposit comes back once you reach 1,250 kWh, and how soon depends on your driving.
