How these numbers are worked out
Illustration only, not a guarantee. What you earn depends on how much you charge. Time to refund depends on your driving. Cash back is 6¢/kWh for the first 1,250 kWh and 11¢/kWh after. The $20 bonus is one time, for new customers, paid after your charger is connected and verified. Overnight offset covers electricity for charging only, on an overnight rate plan, when you charge mostly overnight. Not income.
Overnight plans are opt-in, 11pm to 7am. Rates as of Oct 2026; Ontario rates reset every Nov 1. See overnight details.5

The head start
Three ways Spark starts strong
Where your cash back begins, and when your deposit comes back.

Your deposit back at 1,250 kWh
Your $299 deposit is returned once you have charged 1,250 kWh, the same point your rate steps up to 11¢. How soon depends on your driving.2

If you charge overnight
Help offset your overnight charging costs
Pick where you live to compare your cash back with the electricity you charge with. Uses the slider above, now at 292 kWh a month.
Where an overnight rate exists
Ontario and BC are the two provinces with an overnight price you can charge on, and both are opt-in. Everywhere else is a flat residential rate, so the time of night makes no difference.5
What the overnight comparison covers
Covers electricity for charging only, on an overnight rate plan, when you charge mostly overnight. Cash back is the same in every province and whenever you plug in. Rates as of Oct 2026 and they change, so check your own utility's current rates. Electricity cost is the all-in price of one more kWh: energy plus per-kWh delivery and riders, less rebates, plus sales tax; fixed monthly charges are left out. Estimates only, results vary, not income.

Questions
Questions people actually ask
The program
Why is the home EV charger free? What is the catch?
Fuel suppliers in Canada must buy carbon credits, and charging an electric car creates them. You keep the charger connected so the electricity can be counted, you assign us the credits, we sell them, and we share the proceeds with you in cash. The one catch: the charger is free with a $299 refundable deposit.
Where does the money come from?
Fuel suppliers have to meet federal Clean Fuel Regulations requirements. Your charging generates credits, they are verified, issued and sold, and we pay you a share.
What is a carbon credit, in plain terms?
A unit that represents emissions avoided. Companies that emit buy them to meet requirements. Charging an electric vehicle avoids emissions, so it creates them.
Can I also get an EV charger rebate?
Government rebates are separate programs and vary by province. Check the official program and its terms before you order.7 EV rebates in Canada · BC home charging
Is there a monthly fee?
No monthly fee. You pay the refundable deposit, and it comes back to you.
Can I be in another rewards program at the same time?
No. One charger, one program. Joining two cancels the credits.
I already bought a Soneil charger. Can I join?
Not yet. Right now the program is open to chargers ordered through this page. We will say here when that changes.
Money
How do I get paid?
By Interac e-Transfer or bank deposit. Payout timing is in the program terms [link coming].
Is my $299 deposit refundable, and when do I get it back?
Yes. It is returned once you have charged 1,250 kWh, under the program terms. How soon that happens depends on how much you drive.
How much does it cost to charge an electric car at home?
kWh charged times your price per kWh. Use the calculator above with your own rate. How home charging cost works
How do you work out what the power costs?
It is the price of one more kWh, not your average bill rate: energy plus per-kWh delivery and riders, less any rebate, plus sales tax. Fixed monthly charges are left out. For Ontario Ultra-Low Overnight the official energy price is 3.9¢ per kWh (Ontario Energy Board, effective Nov 1, 2025); delivery, regulatory charges and tax are extra. Rates as of Oct 2026; Ontario rates reset every Nov 1.
Is there an overnight rate where I live?
Two provinces have one you can charge a car on. Ontario has Ultra-Low Overnight (11pm to 7am). British Columbia has BC Hydro time-of-day pricing, 5¢ off over the same hours, with a smart meter. Both are opt-in. Everywhere else is a flat residential rate, so time of night makes no difference.
The charger
Is this a Level 2 charger, and do I need an electrician?
Yes, it is a 40A Level 2 charger on 240V. Plug-in installs into a 240V outlet you already have need no electrician. A hardwired install does, at your cost, and installation cost varies with your panel and wiring.7 Level 1 vs Level 2 · Installation cost
What happens if my Wi-Fi drops?
The charger stores your sessions and syncs them when it reconnects. It can only store a limited number offline, so reconnect soon after an outage.
What does the warranty cover?
Lifetime warranty while you are in the Spark Cashback program. Read the full terms on the warranty page [link coming].
Who do I call if the charger stops working?
Soneil built the charger, so support comes from us. Contact details will be on this page at launch.
Your account
What data do you collect? Do you track where I drive?
When you charge, how much you charge, and the address where the charger is installed, because the credit program requires the location of the equipment. Everything else is device diagnostics. See the privacy policy [link coming].
What happens if I move house?
Address changes are covered in the program terms [link coming].
Can I change my mind?
Cancellation and return terms are in the program terms [link coming].
Is it available in Québec?
