How much does it cost to charge an electric car at home?

The cost to charge an EV at home is the kWh you use multiplied by your electricity price per kWh. The only two numbers you need are how much you charge and what your utility charges.

The formula

Monthly cost = kWh charged × your price per kWh. The price per kWh is your energy rate plus per-kWh delivery and riders, plus tax. Fixed monthly charges are usually left out because you pay them with or without a car.

An example

Illustration only: if you charge 292 kWh in a month at 15¢ per kWh all-in, that is $43.80. At 10¢, it is $29.20. Your own rate will differ.

Does charging overnight cost less?

Some utilities offer cheaper overnight rates, and you opt in. For example, Ontario Ultra-Low Overnight (11pm to 7am) has an official energy price of 3.9¢ per kWh, with delivery, regulatory charges and tax extra (Ontario Energy Board, effective Nov 1, 2025; rates reset every Nov 1). Most other provinces have a flat residential rate.

Where cash back comes in

Spark Cashback pays 6¢/kWh for your first 1,250 kWh and 11¢/kWh after. Cash back can help offset your overnight charging costs if you are on an overnight rate plan and charge mostly overnight. It covers charging electricity only, and it is not income. Try the calculator.

Quick answers

How do I calculate home EV charging cost?

Multiply the kWh you charge by your price per kWh. Use the price of one more kWh, not your average bill rate.

Is it cheaper to charge an EV at night?

Only if your utility offers an overnight rate and you opt in. Where there is a flat rate, time of night makes no difference.
